Ein Brief aus Südafrika
Hi Brigitte, Thanks for your e-mail. The first e-mail I sent on
to a German friend of ours who also lives in South Africa, who emigrated
here a couple of years ago who I thought would be most suitable
for your "Literaturwerkstatt" as he really did what everybody dreams
about: Holiday in South Africa, buying a house, going back to Germany,
giving up the old life and starting a new… He said he will write
to you later.
As for me, we are only half immigrants, we only have summers and
fly with the swallows. For a European to come to South Africa with
all the well meaning doing good thoughts it's almost true what the
joke says: "What´s the difference between a tourist and a racist?
- Two days." Although that is a bit short, once a European gets
to know the political short-comings in this very racist country
it is fascinating and we´re lucky to be just a fly on the wall.
This place is beautiful, fascinating and on the move but I´m glad
I don´t have to bring up a family here and I consider our friends
very brave giving up everything in Europe and moving here holus
bolus. But they are 60+ and have the cash to take the back door
if they had to, which I don´t see coming, yet!
